National Health Systems, Hospitals and Individuals Honored for Excellence in Interactive Patient Care
GetWellNetwork presents IPC awards at seventh annual user conference
Bethesda, Md., June 10, 2014 – GetWellNetwork®, Inc., the leader in Interactive Patient Care™ (IPC) solutions, today announced the recipients of this year’s IPC Awards, which recognize health care leaders and organizations that have demonstrated improved clinical care and outcomes through the use of IPC technology. The awards were presented on June 5 in Chicago during GetConnected 2014, GetWellNetwork’s seventh annual user conference for administrators, clinicians and IT staff.
“As health care continues to move toward an environment of shared decision-making between patient and provider, the concept of patient engagement has moved from theory to practice for health care organizations,” said Michael O’Neil, founder and chief executive officer of GetWellNetwork. “We continue to be amazed at the commitment and innovation of the GetWellNetwork client community to activate patients and their families in their care journey to improve the patient experience, clinical outcomes and overall population health across the care continuum.”
For the first time ever, the GetWellNetwork client community submitted nominees, resulting in a record number of more than 70 nominations. A committee of health care leaders and executives from the client community then reviewed the submissions to select finalists and winners. This year’s IPC Award winners include:
Community Medical Centers in central California achieved exceptional performance improvement in service, quality and operations through the use of IPC and GetWellNetwork’s Blueprint for Success methodology, earning the health system the Overall Achievement award.
This award recognizes leaders within their organization and the IPC community, who, through their vision and commitment to patient-centered care, are having a profound impact on outcomes and the evolution of IPC technology. This year’s IPC Champion is Michael Adcock, FACHE, senior vice president of Operational Support Services at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero, La.
Community Medical Centers were also recognized for their standardized IPC practices and processes, as well as their ability to offer customized services based on the needs of individual patient populations. Facilities within the health system reported across-the-board improvements in patient adherence to prescribed education, falls prevention and clinical staff communication.
Clinician and Staff Empowerment
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago was recognized for exemplifying clinical practice transformation through nursing staff empowerment. Specifically, Lurie Children’s clinicians employ an interdisciplinary approach to engaging patients and families through one-on-one bedside education, customized patient education and music and art therapy.
Care Process Integration
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles integrated customized IPC video education into their electronic medical record (EMR), which led to increased staff efficiency, streamlined clinical workflows and, ultimately, enhanced patient education.
Virtua, a leading health care system based in New Jersey, improved process flow through the integration of IPC technology. Virtua reported patient satisfaction scores of greater than 99 percent and discharge instructions and medication education compliance scores between 98 and 99 percent.
World Class Service and Support
West Jefferson Medical Center received the World Class Service and Support award for implementing a collaborative support team to address hardware, software and configuration issues within four hours of being notified to help reduce patient disruptions.
Engaging frontline clinician teams has proven to be the key to success early on in the IPC journey for Carolinas HealthCare System. Strategies such as targeted patient education, engaging a core team of nursing leaders at the unit level, and continuous, open communication have helped the Carolinas team successfully integrate IPC into their patient care model.
Quality and Safety
Chandler Regional Medical Center in Chandler, Ariz., was recognized for its implementation of the GetWellNetwork Falls Patient Pathway to help reduce instances of patient falls and injury.
Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla., was also recognized for its implementation of an IPC strategy through the GetWellNetwork Falls Patient Pathway. The addition of a Mobility Specialist enhanced patient education and training to mitigate risks and reduce the number of falls.
Finance and Operations
Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, reported early success with their on-site retail pharmacy program, which gives families the opportunity to learn about their child’s prescribed medications and have them filled before discharge. For this innovative use of IPC, Nationwide Children’s received the Finance and Operations award.
Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz., used the GetWellNetwork Pediatric Asthma Pathway to facilitate patient education, improve clinical outcomes and lower operational costs.
Through early adoption of the GetWellNetwork Ambulatory solution, Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute in Charlotte, N.C., part of Carolinas HealthCare System, uses mobile, outpatient education to enhance patients’ understanding and management of their condition, with the goal of improving overall outcomes.
Outstanding Poster Presentations
As sponsors of the IPC Awards event, LG Electronics presented two awards for Outstanding Poster Presentations. More than 30 interactive poster presentations visually demonstrated how leading health care organizations from around the country are advancing care through IPC technology. The executive committee of the newly launched O’Neil Center honored Mercy Medical Center for their presentation, and the IPC client community’s “people’s choice” award went to St. John’s Children’s Hospital.
